In terms of fantasy football penalties, Dave Fleming seems to have lucked out.
The San Francisco Giants lost their fantasy football league last season, and as many leagues around the country do, they were punished for it.
So on Monday night, for the Giants’ game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Oracle Park, Fleming was in full uniform in the dugout. For three innings, he was the Giants’ freshman bat boy.
There are a lot of embarrassing fantasy penalty options in football. We’ve seen tattoos, made to eat a certain number of waffles to leave the Waffle House sooner, forced to play in US Open qualifiers and more. Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis revealed that last in his league with his friends he had to eat an entire batch of undercooked hot dogs.
Flemming seems to have gotten off easy. Getting into bat boy is a great party, and it’s likely that plenty of other last-place contestants would trade their penalties in a heartbeat.
Admittedly though, Fleming was a little sore by the time of the third inning on Wednesday night.
“I have to do my best, man,” Fleming said on the telecast. “You don’t want to get in the way of the game. So I find myself… I’m going off the ice after this, I might not be (to the booth) for the fourth round.”
The Giants and Rays were tied to a 0-0 tie when Fleming passed the bat boy duties to regular bat boy Austin Jane.
The Giants entered Monday’s game having lost six of their last eight games. They sit second in the NL West, 8.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rays, on the other hand, have won two of their last three games. They trail the Baltimore Orioles by three games in the Eastern Conference.
